Airstream, Bendabout Register Victories
In Ylvisaker Cup Action Friday at International Polo Club Palm Beach

WELLINGTON, FL – Eight-goaler Lucas Monteverde scored seven goals, including two penalty shots in the final two minutes, as Airstream rallied past Lechuza Caracas 11-10 in the 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup polo tournament Friday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

In other action, 7-goaler Alejandro Novillo Astrada scored in the final minute to lift Bendabout over Crab Orchard 11-10.

 Monteverde knocked in a 10-yard penalty shot with 2:29 remaining to give Airstream a 10-9 advantage. His 60-yard penalty shot was blocked with 1:06 left and Lechuza Caracas took possession to midfield where they were called for a foul with 17 seconds remaining. Monteverde converted a 40-yard penalty to clinch the victory.

 Lechuza Caracas led 6-4 at halftime before Airstream rallied in the fourth chukker to tie the game at 8-8. Neither team scored in the fifth chukker, setting up the decisive final period.

Six-goaler Ignacio Toccalino made a 30-yard penalty shot to give Lechuza Caracas a 9-8 lead 28 seconds into the sixth chukker. Guille Aguero scored on a breakaway to tie the game with 5:20 left, setting up Monteverde’s heroics.

Aguero finished with three goals and patron Peter Orthwein scored one for Airstream (1-1). Naco Taverna did not score.

Ten-goaler Pite Merlos led Lechuza Caracas (1-1) with five goals while Toccalino added three goals and patron Victor Vargas scored one goal. Gaston Urturi did not score.

Bendabout trailed only once in the game, at 1-0, before rallying to take a 5-2 early in the second chukker. Crab Orchard responded with three consecutive goals to tie the game at 5-5 early in the third chukker. From then on, neither team could pull away although Bendabout always had the upper hand.

Crab Orchard had a chance to tie the game to send it into overtime but Memo Gracida could not get off a shot before the final horn.

Ten-goaler Miguel Novillo Astrada led Bendabout (1-1) with four goals while Alejandro Novillo Astrada and Toby Wayman scored three goals each and patron Gillian Johnston had one goal.

Nine-goaler Agustin Merlos led Crab Orchard (1-1) with seven goals and 9-goaler Memo Gracida added three goals. Patron George Rawlings and Julio Gracida did not score.

Teams were split into four divisions and will play three qualifying games with the top two teams in each of the divisions advancing to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Saturday, February 12 and Sunday, February 13. The semifinals are set for Thursday, February 17 and the final is Sunday, February 20 at 3 p.m.

The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s and was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.
