Feb. 8, 2005

WELLINGTON, FL – Seven-goaler Luis Escobar scored eight goals as Millarville defeated Santa Clara 11-10 to capture first place in Division I with a 3-0 record in the 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup polo tournament Tuesday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

In other action, Black Watch edged Old Pueblo 9-7 to earn second place in the division with a 2-1 record and a trip to the quarterfinals.

Millarville jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the third chukker and led 7-4 at the end of the fourth chukker before Santa Clara began its comeback, tying the game at 9-9 on Andre Diniz’s goal 58 seconds into the final period.

Escobar countered with a nice run to give Millarville a 10-9 advantage with 5:01 left in the game.

Santa Clara was forced to play the final 3:17 without 8-goaler Fabio Diniz, who received two technicals arguing a penalty call. Escobar converted the 60-yard penalty shot to give Millarville an 11-9 lead.

Playing a man short, Santa Clara’s Andre Diniz surprisingly cut the margin to 11-10 on a tap-in in traffic with 2:12 remaining, but they could not come up with a tying goal.

Fred Mannix Jr., Brandon Phillips and Nicolas Intriago added one goal each for Millarville. Jeff Blake finished with four goals while Andre Diniz and Fabio Diniz added three goals each for Santa Clara (1-2). Patron Francisco Escobar did not score.

Black Watch patron Neil Hirsch scored the game-winning goal on a pass from Nacho Figueras with 4:31 left in the sixth chukker, snapping a 7-7 tie, the fourth tie in the game. Figueras picked up a loose ball and added an insurance goal with 2:20 remaining to round out the scoring.

Nine-goaler Facundo Pieres led Black Watch with five goals while Tomas Pieres scored two goals. Hirsch and Figueras finished with one goal apiece.
