Airstream, Lechuza Caracas Advance to Semifinals
In Ylvisaker Cup Action at International Polo Club Palm Beach

WELLINGTON, FL – Seven-goaler Guilli Aguero scored six goals, including two in a 66-second span to snap an 8-8 tie, and sparked Airstream over Black Watch 10-9 in the quarterfinals of the 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup polo tournament Saturday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

In other quarterfinal action, 6-goaler Ignacio Toccalino scored four goals to lead Lechuza Caracas over Millarville 9-7 in a rematch of the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial Cup championship game.

Division IV champion ERG (2-1) plays Skeeterville (2-1) today (Sunday) at 3 p.m. preceded by a quarterfinal match featuring Division III champion White Birch (2-1) against Pony Express (2-1) at noon.

The semifinals are set for Thursday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and the final is Sunday, February 20 at 3 p.m.

Black Watch scored four consecutive goals, three by Nacho Figueras, to rally from a 7-4 halftime deficit. Airstream patron Peter Orthwein tied the score at 8-8 when he knocked in a 5-yard penalty shot with 1:38 left in the fifth chukker.

Aguero gave Airstream a 9-8 lead with 4:38 left in the game when picked up a poor clearing pass from the Black Watch defense and scored easily. Aguero increased Airstream’s margin to 10-8 on a breakaway with 3:31 remaining.

Figueras cut the lead to 10-9 when he corralled a loose ball in front of the goal and scored with 1:11 left in the game. But Airstream controlled the ball enough to foil Black Watch’s attempt to tie the contest.

Orthwein finished with two goals while Lucas Monteverde and Naco Taverna added one goal each for Airstream (3-1). Aguero leads the team with 19 goals and Monteverde has 18 goals.

Figueras led Black Watch (2-2) with six goals while Facundo Pieres scored two goals and Tomas Pieres had one goal. Patron Neil Hirsch did not score. Facundo Pieres finished with a team-high 21 goals and Figueras had 14 goals.

Pite Merlos’ breakaway goal with eight seconds remaining clinched the Lechuza victory. It was Merlos’ only goal of the game and his team-leading 18th of the tournament. Toccalino has scored 14 goals in the four games. Patron Victor Vargas and Gaston Urturi added two goals each for Lechuza Caracas (3-1).

Millarville scored three unanswered goals in the sixth chukker to cut the margin to 8-7 with 55 seconds remaining on Luis Escobar’s 60-yard penalty shot but could not control the ball in the ensuing bowl-in.

Fred Mannix Jr. led Millarville (3-1) with three goals while Escobar and Brandon Phillips added two goals apiece. Nicolas Intriago did not score. Mannix Jr. finished with a team-high 18 goals while Escobar had 15 goals in the tournament.
