Skeeterville, Pony Express Advance to Semifinals
In Ylvisaker Cup Action at International Polo Club Palm Beach
WELLINGTON, FL – Defense ruled the day as Skeeterville outlasted an injury-riddled ERG squad 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup polo tournament Sunday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

ERG’s Pablo Spinacci and Roberto Gonzalez were involved in a collision behind the play midway through the first chukker that changed the complexion of the match.

In other quarterfinal action, Pablo MacDonough scored nine goals to lead Pony Express over White Birch 10-9.

Pony Express (3-1) plays Lechuza Caracas (3-1) at 1 p.m. and Skeeterville (3-1) takes on Airstream (3-1) at 3 p.m. in Thursday’s semifinals. The final is Sunday at 3 p.m.

The game was delayed for 25 minutes as players were evaluated by medical personnel and Spinacci was removed from the field on a stretcher and wearing a neck brace. He is expected to recover in time for the next tournament, the 26-goal Hall of Fame Cup, which begins the week of Feb. 21. Gonzalez continued playing.

“It was very tough on our team,” said ERG’s Nicolas Roldan. “We had to re-arrange our lineup. Tommy Biddle is an amazing player, but it’s tough. He doesn’t know the horses and that’s key. We tried.”

Biddle is one of the game’s most consistent Backs while Spinacci plays forward. ERG’s revamped lineup had patron Scott Wood, normally at Back, up front at No. 1 and Roberto Gonzalez, who was playing Back, moved to No. 2.

Roldan cut the margin to 4-3 on a penalty shot with 2:52 left in the fifth chukker but Skeeterville responded with two goals in a 70-second span. Julio Arellano knocked in a short forehand with 1:48 left and Stevie Orthwein made it 6-3 with 38 seconds remaining when he dribbled down the left side, cut to the middle and made a tap-in.

Gonzalez scored on a breakaway midway through the sixth chukker to cut the margin to 6-4 but Skeeterville controlled the play, although it missed two easy scoring opportunities to put the game away – one by Owen Rinehart on a breakway with 2:50 left in the game and one by patron Skeeter Johnston on a 20-yard forehand with 1:40 remaining.

Both teams made numerous goal-saving plays.

This is Orthwein’s first regular ride in a high-goal tournament.

“I was nervous the whole time,” said the 24-year-old Orthwein. “The game was more wide open than I expected. If you’re not watching them, they go right by you. That happened to me a couple of times early in the game.”

Arellano led Skeeterville with three goals while Orthwein, Owen Rinehart and patron Skeeter Johnston added one goal each.

Roldan led ERG (2-2) with three goals and finished the tournament with 21 goals. Roberto Gonzalez added one goal while patron Scott Wood and Tommy Biddle did not score.

MacDonough scored the game’s final three goals, including a 30-yard penalty shot, to snap a 9-9 tie to lift Pony Express into the semifinals while Alex Agote scored the other goal.

Ten-goaler Mariano Aguerre led White Birch (2-2) with five goals while Del Walton scored two goals and Tomas Franco and substitute Martin Ravina added one goal apiece.

The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s and was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.

The polo matches are open to the public. Tickets for the Sunday games at the International Polo Club Palm Beach are available at the gate, beginning at $10 each. For information, call (561) 204-5687 or visit the club’s website at www.internationalpoloclub.com.
