Airstream, Pony Express Advance to Ylvisaker Cup Championship Game
Sunday at 3 p.m. at International Polo Club Palm Beach
WELLINGTON, FL – Eight-goaler Lucas Monteverde converted a 30-yard penalty shot 1:24 into the second overtime to lift Airstream over Skeeterville 13-12 in the semifinals of the 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup polo tournament Thursday, ending the longest game of the season at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Airstream will play Pony Express, which took a different route to the final with a dominating 13-5 triumph over Lechuza Caracas. The championship match is Sunday at 3 p.m.

Monteverde converted a 30-yard penalty shot to give Airstream its first lead of the game, 12-11, with 2:22 left in the sixth chukker. Skeeterville’s Julio Arellano tied the game at 12-12 when he knocked in a 40-yard penalty shot with 1:10 remaining.

Skeeterville dominated the first overtime but Arellano missed two 60-yard penalty shots and Stevie Orthwein’s shot fell short before the defense cleared it from the goalmouth. Monteverde missed his only opportunity in the first overtime.

In the second overtime, Airstream controlled the ball, moving into the left corner before being fouled.

Monteverde finished with a game-high 10 goals, nine on penalty shots, to lead Airstream (4-1) while Guille Aguero added three goals.

Julio Arellano led Skeeterville (3-2) with eight goals while Owen Rinehart scored two goals and patron Skeeter Johnston and Stevie Orthwein had one goal apiece.

Lechuza Caracas scored 30 seconds into the game and then watched as Pony Express rallied past them en route to victory. Pablo MacDonough led Pony Express with 10 goals while Alex Agote scored two goals and Magoo Laprida added one goal.

Ten-goaler Pite Merlos led Lechuza Caracas with four goals and Chris Gannon, subbing for injured patron Victor Vargas, added one goal.

“(Lechuza) is still the best team of the 22-goal season,” said MacDonough, who added that part of the strategy was to keep the ball away from Merlos. “It’s always good to have Pite with the ball 100 yards away.”
