Rima Leslie Akkad Monla Polo Sportsmanship Award
The Rima Leslie Akkad Monla Polo Sportsmanship Award was dedicated on Tuesday, May 2 at Fair Hills Polo Club in Topanga, CA.

Alison Smith, a graduating Senior from the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans Polo Team is the first recipient of the award.

Rima, a USC Alumnus and an avid polo player, rated 1-goal by the USPA and also voted MVP of a U.S. Women’s Open, was killed in terrorist hotel bombings while visiting Amman Jordan November 9, 2005. She was 34 and is survived by her two young sons and husband.

Current members of the USC polo club and all of Rima’s former USC teammates were on hand to dedicate and present the perpetual trophy to Rima’s mom Patty Akkad, also a polo player.

The spirit behind the criteria for nominating and choosing the recipient was based on “notes to herself” discovered in Rima’s journal after her death.

“ to wear a cheerful face at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile … to give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others … to be too large for worry, to noble for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble” - Rima

The perpetual trophy will be displayed on loan at various polo events across the United States. For more information or to make a request, please email Rule18@aol.com.
