May 20th, '06: The Lakeside Polo Club celebrated their 50th anniversary with 40 polo players ranging in age from 12 - 75. There were 16 chukkers of fast and fun polo.
Final score Dirty Reds def. Handsome Blues with a score of 25- 24.
At the conclusion of the game the ashes of Willis Allen were spread on the field from horseback by Kip Hering and Steve Coblentz, followed by the polo players and umpires. Judy, Harry and Chris Collins along with many friends were in attendance for the ceremony.
Players consisted of members from the following clubs; Lakeside, Poway, San Diego, Orange County including Poway and Lakeside Interscholastic Polo members.
After the game everyone enjoyed an Argentine Asado and Margaritas. We told polo stories, looked at the old newspaper clippings and photos. The pictures shared were from the San Diego Exposition in 1935 or '36, Mission Valley probably also in the late 30's, low tide matches be the beach in front of the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in 1940, and Lakeside in 1956. Players included in the Photos were Dr. Hering, Willis Allen and Charlie Mosse among others. Dr. Bud Hering and Willis Allen played together in all of them. Now they'll be together forever on the polo field that they both loved, as Dad's ashes were spread on the field in 1987.
Russ Sheldon did a masterful job of balancing 36 players onto two teams and keeping them all happy for 16 chukkers over 4 1/2 hours.
